In 1995 Virginia Astley was planning to write a musical of the Thomas Hardy story to follow her album "All Shall Be Well".In the end all that survived was a few songs and a title given to her next CD which was originally called "Woodlanders". In other words, yet another unfinished Virginia project. A few copies of the CD with its first title remained in Japan but it was retitled "Had I The Heavens" after the Yeats poem she set to music. By that time film composer George Fenton was working on the score which starred Rufus Sewll and Polly Walker and which came out in 1998. The music is excellent, changing images with every emotion with the era recaptured in its similarity to Vaughan Williams or Elgar, and is performed by an orchestra led by the strings contractor on "Had I The Heavens": Gavin Wright. The first item though is by the Mellstock Band and Singers,of a traditional hymn known as Psalm 128 and who turn up again for a scene called "The Party". Divided into 16 further sections its another perfect soundtrack for Summer Day.

The soundtrack is one of the better ones you'll hear. Thematically it is similar to the music of the Christopher Reeve/Jane Seymore film Somewhere In Time. The music also sounds as if it hails from the era of French Impressionism. The strings and woodwinds I find achingly beautiful. I am transported everytime I listen to this sound track. Visions of the scenes of Venice from the movie can be revisited when listening to this soundtrack. I loved it more than the movie itself!

This is a beautiful CD that perfectly mirrors the artifice and surface beauty of the Victorian age in which Oscar Wilde lived. Yet underneath, there is a current of secretive discord. This album portrays the double-standard of life with majestically orchestrated string pieces and desolate solo pieces arranged for piano and oboe.
The main themes running throughout (the Constance/home life, the Bosie "Ah, Leave Me Not To Pine", the desolation/trial theme) all return intermixed with each other, creating a fantastic panorama of sound.
Ms. Wiseman's work is wonderful, yet towards the end becomes a bit repetitive. However, for any fan of the movie "Wilde," this soundtrack is a must have!

This music, like the movie, was so great, so refreshing and so wonderfully composed I cannot believe it did not get the press recognition it deserved. I shall die before I ever understand why such a great piece of artwork, both the music and film, should go unnoticed, ungraced, and unrespected, while a tacky, plastic, and tasteless film like Titanic should be raved about as it was. This truly indicates the power of film promotion and the guliability of the public.

This recording is remarkable. This CD has won a Gramophone award, 4f Telerama, 10 Repertoire, and a Diapason d'Or. It has also made the list of the 50 Best Baroque Recordings (BBC Music). Listen: I'm not even a particular fan of Andreas Scholl, but this is one of my most favorite recordings (in a collection that numbers almost 1,000 CD's). Scholl is uniquely suited to the repertory such as this. His angelic voice may not always rise to the occasion in opera (although his performance in Solomon certainly challenges this assumption), but that same angelic voice is always at home in sacred music - blending calm reverence with a hint of emotion, in a manner that is both beautiful and heart-breaking. Listen to his Stabat Mater to know what I mean. Scholl's voice is also quite at home in the secular cantata Cessate Omai Cessate, a cry of unrequited love, albeit more elegaic than passionate. At the surface, this recording, featuring some of the world's most beautiful melodies, is an easy listening (is there a melody more ravishing than Larghetto from Cessate?). But the listening is also revelatory and rewarding because it leads to new layers of meaning and expression on each new listen.

In the wake of his Sixth Sense triumph, young director M. Night Shyamalan shrewdly marketed himself as a marquee draw, a thriller auteur in the vein of Hitchcock and DePalma. In the process he's also run headlong into one of Hollywood's truest adages: There's no such thing as a sure thing. But while his tale of an isolated hamlet ringed by mysterious, threatening 'others' met with tepid reviews and disappointing box office, it also underscored another filmmaking truism: So-so films can still be blessed with magnificent musical scores. This hauntingly beautiful, yet thoroughly contemporary orchestral soundtrack by James Newton-Howard distinguishes itself at every turn, becoming a clear standout in the ongoing collaboration between the composer and Shyamalan. While similar fusions of minimalist and post-modern musical influences can sometimes seem not much more than hollow intellectual exercises, Newton-Howard inhabits his hypnotic arpeggios and droning rhythms here with an evocative undercurrent of the mysterious and mystical. The composer leans heavily on solo violin to conjure a mock folk tradition of indistinct origins, wedding it to a contemporary classical sense that's as seamless as it is distinguished.

Van Helsing [ENHANCED] [SOUNDTRACK]

Bram Stoker's original literary Van Helsing dispatched his nemeses-of-the-night with but a crucifix, a few simple wooden stakes, and a dash of garlic. But this CGI-driven, 21st century Hollywood take on the vampire hunter is bigger, bolder, and, judging from veteran Alan Silvestri's thunderous, goth-on-steroids orchestral score, definitely more bombastic. Courtesy of director/big-budget monster revivalist Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Mummy Returns, The Scoropin King), Hugh Jackman's title character now faces off against Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, a giant werewolf, and Mr. Hyde. With an appropriate lack of subtlety, Silvestri seasons the action set pieces with some gloomy, Herrmann-esque brass, jolting doses of massed percussion, the occasional shrieking choral homage to Carmina Burana--and (for some ears) precious too little of Franz Waxman's haunting, neo-Romantic horror-film lyricism. But then, overwrought popcorn epics call for overwrought popcorn scores, and the bold, epic scale of Silvestri's music can't be denied; it has as much alternately jolting/nervous energy as a double-dose of caffeine. Enhanced CD features include an interactive game trailer, game playing clues, a photo gallery, and preview of a comic book merchandising tie-in.

I couldn't find it anywhere, so I had to import it from the UK. It has the most beautiful love theme I've ever heard. After ripping open the package and shoving it in my computer, I almost cried listening to it. I have learned that the first step to loving another is loving oneself. The theme really spoke to me. It is absolutely gorgeous, interlacing strings and flute (of course.) Honestly, I am usually not biased toward my own instrument, but the Tom Jones love theme shows flute at it's best. Ok, I might as well go join Thoreau in the woods. I have no reason to love the movie, but I do. I am a bit crushed, though. Both of the main actors got old and wierd. The characters are not the actors, nonetheless.

The score to Titus, Julie Taymor's film version of Shakespeare's bloody play, starts exactly the way one assumes it will: a generous chorus pumps out a foreboding (and relatively unintelligible) chant, supported by tumultuous orchestration. The orchestra will appear again, on occasion, but trust that this is the last moment your ears will experience anything that they are even remotely expecting. Perfectly suited to Taymor's flamboyant, genre-mad interpretation of Shakespeare's script, composer Elliot Goldenthal (Alien 3, Interview with the Vampire, Heat) has fashioned a tapestry that also includes hot-tempered big-band jazz, industrial rock, circus themes, and exotic tone poems. Furthermore, these elements overlap in ways that are more detailed and inventive than the motion picture industry generally allows. Midway through "Tribute & Suffrage," at the height of a hopped-up swing session, the set metamorphoses into kettledrums that usher in a majestic, symphonic sequence. The next time jazz is heard ("Swing Rave"), the band is backed by fuzz-toned guitarists (among them Page Hamilton, of the metal band Helmet) who could frizz Brian Setzer's retro perm. Clearly it is Goldenthal, and not Hollywood mercenary Michael Kamen, who should have conducted Metallica's orchestral S&M project.

If you think you've heard it all, you're wrong. The three big guys are indeed back, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a rabidly enthusiastic crowd to welcome them. They sing many favorites-- "Granada," "Because," "Nessun dorma"--and there are a pair of medleys: one devoted to love songs, and one called "Medley of the World," which ends with a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that might just bring tears to your eyes. If the truth be known, the three tenors have put on 8 years since we first heard them together, and a fair amount of bloom is off their rose-like voices--with Domingo's ardency sounding a bit hard-edged, Carreras's tone even more spread than before, and some of Pavarotti's gold tarnished and his breath shorter. Suffice it to say that older CDs by these three formerly-really-great tenors are worth their weight in gold, compared to the bronze you'll find here. But the classy James Levine at the helm keeps the "event" going with passion, and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement.

I have loved the music for "Somewhere in Time" for years. When I heard "Swept from the Sea", I knew without even looking that it had to be John Barry's work. He is brilliant! Many times his work has gotten me through a tough day, or soothed me when I couldn't sleep. I also believe that he makes fifty percent of the magic in a film!

This is a beautiful accompanying piece to the wonderful series, "Pride & Prejudice", it definitely evokes the same feelings & emotions that were engendered when watching the film, which is an absolute must for any quality soundtrack score: that it must strongly bring to mind what is happening on screen at the time! This one does that.
From the delightful opening theme to the finale, every note of the score seems to fit Jane Austen's wonderful story perfectly. The orchestration is superb and the recording itself is outstanding. My favorite sections include the "Canon Collins," which has that wonderful bassoon obbligato, befitting of the bumbling Mr. Collins. And who can help visualizing Lady Catherine de Bourgh upon hearing the "Rosings" theme? An added bonus is experiencing the wonderful musicianship of pianist Melvyn Tan. As far as soundtracks go, this is one of the best!
All in all, I must say that this is a beautiful soundtrack for anyone who enjoyed the movie, "Pride & Prejudice"...highly recommended!

For anyone with an eclectic taste in music who needs a change from endless Mozart, Handel, Bach et al, this is a very welcome and refreshing recording. The beautiful introduction and closing song by Ofra Haza is worth the price of the CD alone. Why "Elo Hi" did not hit the top of the pop charts the way "Pie Jesu" did must only be due to marketing.
I first heard this music when I caught the film "La Reine Margot" on TV. Although the film was excellent, it was just a little too gory, but oh, the music! It evoked childhood memories of visiting Russian churches and also recalled to mind the magnificent "Ivan the Terrible". This was the first time I had even heard of the composer Goran Bregovic, which is not surprising as music in the US is dominated by pop and country. Finding a station playing classical or other is very difficult and dependent on where one lives. The classical section of the music stores consists of Charlotte Church, Andea Bocelli and a few vintage recordings of works by 18th and 19th century composers.
I would recommend this recording to anyone who enjoys the singing of Ofra Haza, and who does not consider that classical music was only written in western Europe.

Nott is probably most famous for the bouncy brass band march he wrote for the main titles of the cult Wallace and Gromit animated shorts, so the beautiful, emotional music in A Respectable Trade may come as something of a surprise to those unfamiliar with his other works. The series, based on Philippa Gregory's acclaimed novel, tells the story of Mehuru, an African nobleman stolen from his home and sold into slavery in 18th Century England, who falls in love with his new owner Josiah Cole's wife, Frances. Eschewing the hackneyed ethnic rhythms that lesser composers would no doubt have used to portray the racial elements of the story, Nott instead has chosen to compose to the film's English setting and write in a lush, modern, classical style. However, Nott's dilemma in writing for a subject as controversial as the slave trade was that he could not afford to overload the more traumatic scenes of slaves being chained together in bowels of ships and women being raped with over-the-top music which might trivialise and, in some cases, sanitise the horrors of the story. He overcomes this by scoring those scenes with admirable restraint, relying on solemn violins, rumbling timpanis and the occasional tolling bell to depict the drama and tragedy of the events unfolding, and the resulting cues ("Gag Muzzle", "The Slave Ship" and "Two Sides of the World") are all the more effective because of it. The more passionate element of the story, the forbidden love between Frances and Mehuru, is captured by two absolutely gorgeous recurring themes that highlight Nott's real flair for lush string writing. The first, "Frances' Theme", is delicate and attractive, yet slightly melancholy, and features a lovely oboe solo. To me, the theme describes the character of Frances as being a woman repressed and dominated by her husband, overcome with desire for a mysterious, exotic stranger, but who is destined never to be with the man she loves due to circumstances beyond her control. The score's full-blown romantic theme, first presented in "Love Fulfilled" and prominent in several other tracks, begins with an idyllic, pastoral melody, but builds up to stunning a full-orchestral climax. For me, these two themes sum up the entire score, and the story - a combination of all-encompassing love and lust, tinged with a sadness and regret. These two themes admittedly do tend to dominate the score and, as you would expect, many of the middle-album cues where the themes are not present are scored simply with slow, solemn strings and subtle woodwinds. To his credit, Nott tries to break the musical monotony by experimenting with occasional dips into English Baroque which convey the comedic aspects of the story well. He makes great use of this style of writing in a number of cues, most notably the stately "Lord and Lady Scott Visit", the pompous march for "Mr. Kedge", and especially "Marriage", which features an effective harpsichord solo. There are two powerful percussion-led action cues in "Get Muhuru" and "Mehuru and Bates Fight", the latter of which is slightly reminiscent of some of John Barry's Bond movie work and, as the story is set in and around the seafaring port of Bristol, some of the cues invoke images of the ocean, most notably the dramatic "The Rose Sails", which rises and falls with every eddy, and the majestic "The Merchant Venturers Triumph". Nott's style of orchestral grandeur and huge, sweeping themes is sure to bring him more fans and accolades as time goes by. If the music for A Respectable Trade is anything to go by, then there is no doubt in my mind that the name Julian Nott will be gracing the opening titles of movies on many a cinema screen for years to come.

The soundtrack to "Restoration" is an uncannily seamless blend of orchestral and chamber music (mostly Henry Purcell) with the modern-day scoring of the peerless James Newton Howard. Purcell's "King Arthur" and "The Fairy Queen" are used here, and Howard melds his work with Purcell's so beautifully that I think somewhere in heaven, Purcell must be smiling down at Howard.
It's an astonishing soundtrack, filled with gorgeous music that suggests floral tapestries, lutists wandering through a grassy field, richly appointed thrones, crowned heads, corseted ladies and bewigged gentlemen, but most of all, an urgency implied by love and ardor. It's just magnificent.

Simply because this film has such a great sense of humor, it would only intensify the hilarity of the picture. The soundtrack was not perhaps the most original, then again, what is? This soundtrack had heart and a flow about it that was very interesting and pleasing to the ear and soul. Sometimes I hoped that I could see the lives of the other people in the plot, like that little deaf/mute boy, Paul or whatever happened to the abbot? Overall, I must say that the music is beautifully composed, funny in a very literary, upper minded way and a sheer delight. Not for those with a taste for low-brow humor however.

If you like sad, but also romantic music, this is it.
Since many music fans do not have a certain dark melancholy inside, they discard this score as mediocre or even bad... IT IS PERFECT! There is deep romance (not superficial, although at first this may sound so...), haunting drama (Troops in the Mist and Honor Inflamed), realistic action music that even reaches heartbreaking emotion (Rannoch Moor Suite) and an "end of evil" cue for Cunningham (Love and Death Suite)...!
Rob Roy is Burwell's best works, emotional and dark, with a romantic twist in it.

This soundtrack, while not from the best movie ever made, could just as well be a contender for that category. Combining Native American rhythms with naturistic compositions and soft, mellow themes, The Scarlet Letter soundtrack, composed by John Barry, is a breathtaking mix of beauty. Native American influences can be heard in numerous tracks throughout, most significantly in the beginning song and the dark themes related to Roger Chillingworth. Nature's beauty can be felt in track three, entitled "The Bird-The Swimmer," as the composer uses percussion instruments, strings, and a boy's choir to bring the forest to life. The more suspenseful music, evident in tracks nineteen and twenty-one, use forceful drums, horns and strings to accompany the ending scenes. Although the movie has been hailed as a total disaster, it is a far cry from that of its soundtrack, which is nothing short of amazing.

Whenever I find myself in a state of sublime enjoyment over a film's score, the chances are good that, as the credits roll, Patrick Doyle's name will appear! This soundtrack is truly gorgeous.

Pop musician and film composer Danny Elfman continues his longstanding collaboration with director Tim Burton (Elfman made his movie music debut way back in 1985 on Pee-Wee's Big Adventure) with Sleepy Hollow. For Burton's cinematic take on the ghoulish Washington Irving classic, Johnny Depp stars as Ichabod Crane, while Elfman does his best to create some truly frightful mood music. Needless to say, he succeeds. Dramatic string passages, crashing percussion, and a children's choir all contribute to this eerie movie score that never settles on a singular theme. "Into the Woods" is the disc's creepiest moment, where the sounds of strings, brass, and a choir create a web of suspense. There are no dull moments here; whether driving and powerful ("Introduction") or mysterious and ethereal ("Sweet Dreams"), Elfman's score is--as usual--superb.

Blending an original score by Wojciech Kilar with complementary pieces by Schubert, this recording creates a definite mood. One of my favorite original pieces is the opening track, "My Life Before Me" which is so evocative that it's hard not to be touched by it in some way. This is not a sountrack full of generic, John Williams-like orchestrations; rather, each piece stands on its own.
It's not necessary to be familiar with either the film or Henry James' original novel to appreciate this great soundtrack; while I may have some problems with the creative choices made by the director of the film, this disc is one of my all-time favorites of any genre.

Michael Nyman came of age as a classical composer in the radical London of the late '60s. His work embraces multiple vernaculars (jazz, avant garde, conceptual art) and helped cement the foundation of what came to be known as minimalism. Decades into his career, Nyman's score to Jane Campion's film The Piano made him a star. The movie's themes of colonialism and silence (its protagonist, portrayed by Holly Hunter, cannot speak) were perfectly aligned with his longtime interests in world and ambient music. Horn players assist members of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in fleshing out Nyman's stately, hymn-like motifs. On the more heavily orchestrated cues, sentimentality wins out over minimalist restraint; the best tracks feature Nyman on solo piano, playing the rudimentary, faux period repertoire of Hunter's character.

Coming to terms with Dario Argento's reinterpretation of Gaston Leroux's ever-mutating story, Morricone interlaces his original compositions with snippets of such French belle époque as Bizet's Carmen and Gounod's Faust. The track layout is semisatirical, with such titles as "Sighs and Sighs," "Threatening Cries," and "Romantic Pollution", but the relentlessly suspenseful mood gets old quickly. One highlight--reminiscent of music fitting for the famous silent film--is the organ solo on "Playing Alone." There are more than enough soporific moments, but Morricone's unabashed love of sentimental melodies, heavily orchestrated melancholia, and occasional outbursts of violence are ideal for the subject. Here, as in many of his later efforts, Morricone can evoke a distinct sense of déjà vu, being that he likes to borrow from his past work.

Though Hollywood has long had a love affair with historical epics, it has sorely shortchanged America's own most compelling chapter, the War of Independence. And if this tale of a retiring Colonial hero whose family gets drawn into the war against the British has no shortage of production ironies--being helmed by a German director and starring Australian-raised Mel Gibson--its score is a solid, stirring effort by American John Williams. Largely eschewing typical bombastic epic fodder for a mostly understated score rich in his distinctive writing for brass and strings, Williams's music seeks out the story's emotional underpinnings as much as its battle-scarred action sequences. The haunting main theme here begins as a Celtic-flavored reel for guitar and violin, then wells into strings, martial drumbeats, and full-bodied brass. Much as he did for the Oscar-nominated Saving Private Ryan, Williams paints a mature, alternately abstract and pastoral portrait of armed conflict, often as not reinventing the genre's heroic traditions as he goes.

Mel Gibson staked $30 million and his superstar reputation on this painstakingly bloody interpretation of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all the while dodging charges of anti-semitism and fostering excruciating cinematic gore at the expense of Christ's message (a notion that also begs some uncomfortable questions about this version's S&M undertones). But because the film's dialog plays out in ancient authentic language dialects, John Debney's musical score takes on an even more central dramatic role. In some ways an unlikely choice as composer (having cut his teeth on many a lightweight comedy and kidflick) Debney nonetheless rises to the challenge, first conjuring up a synth-laden soundscape whose gothic moodiness should be familiar to admirers of the work of Lisa Gerrard, then seasoning it with indigenous instruments, booming percussion and ancient modalities that give the score an almost palpable sense of time and place. As did Jeff Danna on his earlier score for the gentler, de facto companion piece, The Gospel of John, Debney eventually gets 'round to genuflecting towards some Hollywood choral and melodic traditions (the Gospels themselves having arguably helped lay the original foundations for Tinseltown's venerable three-act structure), but there's nothing cheap about his music of triumph and redemption, rooted as ever in roiling currents of ancient spiritual mysticism. Gibson's vision of the Passion has had many second-guessing his motivations and choices, but Debney's rich, evocative score proves there's nothing wrong with his ears.

One of the most over-looked scores in the year that Titanic swept everything. From the beginning, Thomas Newman evokes the mystery and music of glass. Gently and gradually, it becomes a representation of glass pieces that are eventually put together to build the glass church, the highlight of Oscar and Lucinda. Perfectly complementing the strange and unredeemed love story between Oscar and Lucinda, the score narrates the story, laying out the dreams and aspirations of the characters, their despair and hope.
This CD may not readily appeal to everyone. But have a listen to it first before you buy. You never know what beautifully inspiring music you may find.
The recording is airy and atmospheric. The Sony Classical label promises pure unadulterated acoustics. Exquisite in its softer moments and majestic in its swells. A must-have for music fans who appreciate classical type scores for films.

Listening to Rachel Portman's score, you find yourself wondering if she misread the assignment sheet and thought she was working for an adaptation of the Dickens classic made by Masterpiece Theater, not one by troubled, thoughtful cinéaste Roman Polanski. The music here is lovely. Portman, whose other works include Nicholas Nickleby and Emma, is very skilled at evoking 19th-centure ambiance without falling into pure mimicky of that period's classical composers. But "lovely" isn't necessarily what one might expect from Oliver Twist. It's all very quiet. How could something titled "Escape from Fagin" be that subdued?
And yet so it is. "The Murder" reprises similar themes with the same results. The Prague Philharmonic (a popular orchestra who's recorded everything from Dr. Strangelove: Music from the Films of Stanley Kubrick to the heavy strains of black metal band Dimmu Borgir) does its best, but one wishes for more depth throughout. Polanski is never afraid to stare straight into the darkness; Portman should have felt empowered to do the same.

The heart of Bijlstra score is an unforgettable topic. A pleasant melody carried out strijkers is completed with purchaser elements and builds in a triumphant and loving manner the topic. It reflects the progressive feminist character of the film good and accentuates this still further by an outlawed manifold. Sometimes it returns further in subtle form, but sometimes also a full glory, with recurrences and other tone altitudes. Ilona Sekacz passed that earlier in a different way for the similar Antonia, with several orkestrale layers several emotions and developments. The consonance color of the score of Nynke is rather natural and the score rather heavy. By the film gone it are the dark low strijkers and subdued purchaser whom Nynke outline to the always further isolation of the main personage. This is sometimes reinforced recurrence of melody going together with certain minimalistische piano-noten. Just like at the film the quiet and calm tempo of the score is an extra pluspunt, which in every way the dramatic impact increased. Without a more impressive last score of Bijlstra.

Yet I have not seen TV movie "Nostromo", it is a real pleasure to listen this soundtrack. All Morricone trademarks are here - lyricism, fugue technique and perfect instrumentation. The political upheaval in tropical country Costaguana is painted with dark strokes in contrast with delicate flute passages. Morricone mixes beautiful woman vocalizing, appropriate ethnic instruments (the Andean pan-pipes) and brilliant orchestration. The most precious are lyrical themes "The silver of the mine", "Gisella" and "Nostromo". Wonderful CD!

Patrick Doyle has become one of those composers whose first works in motion pictures mark the status of film music scoring. His work for "Henry V" -actually his first -put him on the map. But "Much Ado About Nothing" puts him on a pedestal.
Emma Thompson gives a sweet reading on 'The Picnic', thus giving support to the main love theme, which is truly fantastic. Later this track gives way to the 'Overture', a magnificent piece with epic proportions and, perhaps, one of Doyle's best themes. The vocal tracks (sung by himself, I believe) 'Sigh No More, Ladies' and 'Pardon, Goddess Of The Night' are truly enchanting. Overall, the music on this CD is remarkable. Patrick Doyle is remarkable.
