"Mrs. Brown" is a lovely score, but it is very somber and dignified, and can be very heavy. The most light-hearted track is 'The Swim.' The music makes Victoria very alive, for she was very somber in the film.

I've heard just about every recording of Zauberflote from Toscanini and Beecham in 1937 (both of whom, for some bizarre reason, use the heavy dramatic tenor Helge Roswaenge as Tamino) to the present, and have had different favorites at different times, most notably the first Solti version with Deutekom, Burrows, Prey and Talvela and the Armin Jordan version with Jo, Orgonasova, Winbergh and Hagegard, but all have had faults either in pacing, the casting of certain key roles (the dreadful Pilar Lorengar as Pamina with Solti), etc. In recent years I've acquired a video version from German TV circa 1974 with a wonderful cast, Edith Mathis, Cristina Deutekom, Nicolai Gedda, William Workman and Hans Sotin, conducted by Horst Stein. Yet none of these performances quite prepared me for what I heard on this Gardiner recording: perfect tempi, superb orchestral texture, a forward momentum that helps keep the second act moving, and a cast of light-voiced but superb singers who follow all of Mozart's written instructions and, by doing so, bring their roles--and the opera--to life in a way I have never heard before. From first note to last, this "Flute" is conducted like a long, detailed, multi-movement symphony in which all the disparate elements congeal with perfect harmony. Even the Three Ladies, who usually bore me to death, sing with a rhythmic liveliness and perfect vocal blend that absolutely astonished me. This is all the more surprising to me since I usually don't like Gardiner's Mozart: I often find it rushed but not detailed, with singers sometimes inadequate for their roles. Here, however, he scores a perfect 10. My only quibble, and it is a small one, is that bass Harry Peeters has a pronounced vibrato in places, especially in the final scene where he sounds as if he is running out of voice; but that is a small price to pay for a performance that totally avoids the "romantic" crust that big-voiced singers and power conductors have brought to Zauberflote over the years. This recording was as great a revelation to me as the Colin Davis "Idomeneo," which I also highly recommend.

This is a very inexpensive Don Giovanni done by Barenboim in the early Seventies. It's better sung than his remake on Erato, and the cast is good for that time. It represents what you could have heard at Glyndebourne on a summer evening outside London. Geraint Evans sounds a bit old as Leporello, the Commendatore is woolly, and the Donna Anna isn't always on pitch, but everything else works. Barenboim uses a relatively reduced orchestra but conducts in romantic style, often with slowish tempos. He was young a the time, but his idol Furtwangler conducted this opera quite slowly by modern standards, which must have influenced Barenboim's ideas. One big negative is that squeezing the opera on two CDs involved some cuts, mostly in recitatives and various additions that Mozart made for the Prague premiere.
Here is a rundown of the cuts: Now, it is not unusual for recitatives in Mozart operas to be shortened, and the practice doesn't upset me greatly, but there is a difference between trimming something and cutting it off entirely; and for the most part, that is what happens here. The recitatives in Don Giovanni are not filler; they are an important part of the action, as well as part of the characters' identities, and omitting them for the purpose of squeezing this recording onto two CDs is false economy. At times, the effect is ridiculous: the graveyard scene, for example, has been reduced to "O statua gentilissima" (3:36). Arias follow hard upon each other with an annoying abruptness--both musically and in terms of the editing, which doesn't disguise the hatchet job. Inconsistently, "Dalla sua pace" and "Mi tradì" (plus its recitative) are included in an appendix at the end rather than in their appropriate places within the opera--as if textual authenticity had any relevance at all in such a heavily cut recording! Apparently the original release also included the frequently cut scene in act II in which Zerlina shaves an unwilling Leporello. This, too, is missing from this new reissue. Clearly, it is no replacement for the original version.

This is a wonderful soundtrack of both classical and contemporary tracks. The most outstanding of the original scores are "Moll of Flanders" and "Moll's Jig," which has a Celtic feel to it. There is also a great Sarah McLaughling song, and the classical tracks near the end of the CD cover some of the best composers of all time.
I have listened to the music from this soundtrack many times since and the feelings that it brings out are still the same, beauty, grace, love and passion. There is a very lovely selection of songs here and I highly recommend this CD.

The Merchant of Venice is brought to life by the music of composer Jocelyn Pook and the extraordinary voices of singing sensation Hayley Westenra and counter-tenor Andreas Scholl. The Merchant of Venice original score CD (Decca) is a beautiful, stirring collection of old and new music, brought to life through old instruments, superb performers and original recordings. Baroque violin, lute, theorbo, qanun, cornet and sackbuts were some of the exotic instruments used in this music. Jacqueline Pook researched the instruments and tunes of this era. She has a blend of medieval, baroque and renaissance elements which is striking. The Baroque Singers add their voices to the extraordinary music.

Don't expect to find the aural sequel to James Horner's epic score to Titanic on The Mask of Zorro. On Zorro, Horner flavors his orchestrations with flamenco, lets some instruments have their solo turns, and goes for a distinct Latin flavoring on most tracks. In the theater it's a rare treat--the composer bridges the gap between the Zorro of long ago and the prerequisite sweeping orchestrations of today's cinema. A variety of influences--everything from his work on Willow to the frenzied stomping of Michael Flatley--seemingly creep into the work. Unfortunately, the vocals of Marc Anthony and Tina Arena on "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You" (Zorro's equivalent to "My Heart Will Go On") stick out like a sore Anglo thumb amid the rest of this fine score.

The directing debut of Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace adapts the Alexandre Dumas classic for Leonardo di Caprio and--well, at least it doesn't hit an iceberg. The first full score by sometime Hans Zimmer collaborator Glennie-Smith is one of those instances of a composer outwitting his film material. Utilizing the fusion of the electronic, symphonic and choral music familiar from Zimmer's best work, Glennie-Smith manages the impressive feat of sounding classical and contemporary in the same moment.

The music soundtrack for the Luther movie really provides emotional "punch" for the whole movie. It is powerful and stirring and has an "other worldly" quality that fits perfectly with the powerful events in the history of the world that the movie is all about.
If you loved the Luther movie, one big reason you did, perhaps without realizing it, is the music that is flowing underneath and around what you are seeing on the screen.
Highly recommended.

Agreed! the Messiah was originally written in English because it was considered that the English Choirs were superior to their European counterparts. But! I have always been interested in how it would sound in the German vernacular. Granted it's a fair age now, but it appeared the better of the odd couple offered. The soloists to start with, would have to be the best quartet I could think of. The late Andrew Davis has always been a favourite of mine, I have his in many operas. The sheer Acrobatical agility of her vocal technique always had me under it's spell. Toronto Mendelssohn Choir & Toronto Symphony Orchester are expertly guided by the competent hand of Andrew Davis and richly recorded by the engineers of EMI.

Composer Patrick Doyle's first film score accompanied Kenneth Branagh's first movie as director. For both, Henry V (1989) is a triumph. Branagh's vision of the play is a far darker, more realistic depiction than the morale-boosting patriotism of Laurence Olivier's 1945 classic. Doyle's score had to follow in the footsteps of William Walton, but undaunted, the first-timer rose to the challenge magnificently. Briefed by the director to follow "Shakespeare's golden words" and be "as bold as possible," Doyle produced music of epic scope, lyrical passion, and descriptive imagination. The score has a real flavor of opera--a trait that would become familiar in all of this composer's later work--as Doyle underscores the great speeches (notably the St Crispin's Day speech) with a tangible sense of drama, but one that is always sensitive to the nuances of the words. Set-pieces such as the death of Falstaff and the visceral Battle of Agincourt stand out, but the entire score feels operatically through-composed, unified by Doyle's strong instinct for melody. The melodramatic climax of his "Non nobis, Domine" (that's the composer singing at the beginning) unashamedly rivals "Land of Hope and Glory" for--as Branagh puts it--"hummability." Quite how they coaxed Sir Simon Rattle and the CBSO into the studio remains a mystery, but the result is one of the best performed, most orchestrally luxurious soundtracks ever recorded. Patrick Doyle's later scores may be more refined (try Hamlet, for example), but none quite match the sheer exuberance of this debut.

In the grotesque bell-ringer "Quasimodo", Victor Hugo created one of the most vivid characters in classic fiction. Quasimodo's doomed love for the beautiful gypsy girl Esmerelda is an example of the traditional love theme of beauty and the beast. Yet, set against the massive background of Notre Dame de Paris and interwoven with the sacred and secular life of medieval France, it takes on a larger perspective. The characters come to life: the poet Gringoire, the tormented priest Claude Frollo, the upright, fun-loving captain Phoebus and above all Quasimodo and Esmerelda themselves. It is a tale peppered with humour but fuelled by the anguish which unfolds beneath the bells of the great cathedral of Paris.
The sound is great, and the orchestration is something to hear.

The majority of the tracks are outstanding, played by such masters as Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma.
However, Sir Georg Solti and Murray Perahia get the gold. Solti's brilliant, vivid readings of the movements from select Beethoven symphonies are nothing short of inspired. Perahia's exquisite taste and touch on the piano has no rival. And when the two men team up to play two movements from the "Emperor" concerto together... well, let's just say that they are playing *Beethoven*, and not merely his music. The music jumps to life under their capable hands as they draw out colors and textures never before heard in this work. The second movement, especially, is unsurpassed in its beauty.

Elliot Goldenthal's score perfectly captures the mood of the film, from the opening notes of "Libera Me" to the reprise of "Born to Darkness" at the end. He builds on a few basic themes, adding excitement to the mix with the high-intensity "Louis' Revenge" and "Claudia's Allegro Agitato." As some of the track titles suggest, Goldenthal uses classical themes and techniques to compose his music, which works nicely. So well, in fact, that the Guns n Roses' rendition of "Sympathy for the Devil," appropriate as it was in the film, sounds like an afterthought here. The soundtrack is a little too repetitive to hold up well to repeated listens, but it's a fine effort overall, and one that holds true both to the film and to the Anne Rice novel on which it was based.

This music was the best I have heard in a long time for a soundtrack. It's very dramatic. The movie does something that composers have not done in a while. Use the soundtrack as part of the movie to get it more dramatic touch. The bells the runing of wolfs its all the soundtrack not sound effects. Watch the movie first then you'll be able to appreciate this soundtrack. The song at the end is very deep and touching.

This is another great presentation, boasting an anamorphic picture that is both colourful and sharp. There is a very brief sequence during the film's opening titles that plays just a little raggedly but this soon settles down. And there are a few very minor jumps due to missing frames present in the main body of the film but these don't pose a problem. Apart from that, there's very little in the way of print damage present. The sound, which features the film's original French soundtrack supported by optional English subtitles, is generally very good but the dialogue does get just a little raspy in a couple of spots.

Poledouris has outdone himself with this composition. His music evokes the crystal style of Ennio Morricone and the cinematic majesty of John Williams. It reflects a conversion from light to dark and completes the painting that is the film. In his composition we hear the brooding of Javert's soul, the love and compassion of Valjean. True to the literary work, both the score and the film focus their attention on the conflict between the redeemed Valjean and the obsessed Javert. The score is insightful on a personal level, allowing the listener the realization that darkness exists in all of us, but that darkness is merely the absense of light, the light of human compassion and love. Superb on a technical level, creatively beautiful, this score makes a fine addition to any personal music library, classical or otherwise.

Not to be confused with the collection Songs Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia, this album is Harry Gregson-Williams's instrumental score for the movie. Marking the composer's third collaboration with director Andrew Adamson (after both Shrek flicks), this score also is one of the more mature offerings from Gregson-Williams, best known for his work on family films. The music is lush and assured, if a bit predictable. Indeed, it fits squarely in the current style popular for big epics--even using (on a few tracks) the vocals of Lisbeth Scott, which fall halfway between those of Enya and the Cocteau Twins' Liz Fraser (both of whom, uncoincidentally, appeared on the Lords of the Rings soundtracks). The CD concludes with four songs, with Gregson-Williams cowriting Scott's "Where." On "Can't Take It In," Imogen Heap's vocal acrobatics eerily recall those of the Cranberries' Dolores O'Riordan, while Alanis Morissette's "Wunderkind" is an inspirational, almost girl-powerish track written from the point of view of the movie's Lucy. But the best of these songs is "Winter Light" by Tim Finn, four minutes of understated, piano-driven melancholia. Look for it tucked near the very end of the CD.

O'Marinar left me wanting to hear more. See the movie!

Director Kevin Reynolds infuses Alexandre Dumas's classic tale of treachery and revenge with the same contemporary, kinetic energy he employed on Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, arguably to much better effect. Composer Ed Shearmur's moody, evocative score is a great asset in the effort. Largely eschewing the pomp and Wagnerian melodramatics of many similar costume dramas, the composer again evokes much of the same sense of delicate ambience and quiet mystery he successfully used on K-PAX. Working in a contemporary vein, Shearmur seamlessly fuses his electronic elements with the shadings of the London Metropolitan Orchestra, creating a slyly organic score that builds its dramatic character on rhythms, space, and color, rather than typically brash melodic cues. Shearmur's music shades mood and character without calling attention to itself. If there's a temptation to lament the lack of melody here, it's good to remember people don't revere Bernard Herrmann's music for its hummable qualities, either.

The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

In the likely absence of further new works Richard Rodney Bennett and John Tavener collectively, we listen to their work as individuals. Bennett has brilliantly realized an operatic vision of Gormenghast. While showing the antecedents of Bennett and his studies with Stockhausen this, nevertheless, is a distinctive and breathtaking work that stands as a great triumph. The use of voice and the narrative structure of soundtrack lead to a greater unity and coherence of the work than in his improvisation based earlier work. The sweep of sounds that Bennett elicits from the orchestra, instrumentalists and vocalists is stunning in its diversiy and consistency.

Most modern Hollywood films have musical "temp tracks" laid in as they're edited, usually classical standards or music from other soundtracks that helps shape the dramatic and emotional intentions of works in progress. Sometimes these temp tracks become the score (as in "2001"), but more often they serve as a template for the film's eventual scorer. That said, we'll boldly climb out on a limb and opine that director Ridley Scott was listening to a whole lot of Holst's The Planets as he was cobbling together his modern gladiator epic. Credit Hans Zimmer for taking "Mars, the Bringer of War" and hammering its familiar harmonic and rhythmic Sturm und Drang into something serviceably fresh; cohort Lisa Gerrard generally handles the more ethereal, atmospheric passages. As epic in scope as its thematic inspiration (and with enough occasional nods to "authenticity" to make it work), this is nonetheless a work of often surprising nuances, and one that recasts the traditional heroic orchestral score in deliciously dark and ominous tones. Warning: repeated listening may inspire the invasion of neighboring countries.

If twin-brother filmmakers Allen and Albert Hughes wanted to deliberately mess with their reputation as masters of the contemporary black urban milieu, they couldn't have chosen a better vehicle than a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel and its ominous exploits of notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper on the shadowy streets of Victorian London. This soundtrack album opens with the "Wormwood Remix" of Marilyn Manson's Holy Wood single "The Nobodies," an obvious bow to contemporary marketing that nevertheless sets the proper tone with its bleak ethos and jagged rhythms.
But it's the dark, brooding score of largely unsung South African composer Trevor Jones that's the real focus here. Jones's masterful use of orchestral color and pacing, punctuated by slight percussive, choral, and electronic flourishes, paints a musical landscape as bleak as it is suspenseful. The composer's use of melody is spare, deliberate, and minor key, helping to infuse the score with a very human sense of melancholy even as it tightens the screws of dramatic tension. The concluding track, "Bow Belle (Absinthium)," offers up the strangest treat: a swirling, psychedelic cocktail of twisted, 19th-century ballroom gentility and contemporary digital sorcery that seems to crackle through a gramophone player.

Never has a score had more energy and "life" in its compositions than that of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, composed by Patrick Doyle. His use of many instruments at once to create a feeling of hurried tension is astounding, and, combined with the nonstop moving of the camera, keeps the action moving. The ever-present love theme, which is based on Byron's "So we'll go no more a roving" poem, is heard in its entire in track twenty-one, entitled "The Wedding Night." This, above all others, will sweep you into the true emotional power of the film, allowing you to experience the feelings of the characters as well as the horror of the story itself. While some tracks called for a smaller orchestra, others, such as "Elizabeth" and "The Montser" required a full assembly. Totally moving and very forceful, this is a must for any soundtrack buff's collection, as well as fans of the 1994 film.

"First Knight" is one of the most triumphant scores ever written by Jerry Goldsmith. The theme for Arthur -or Camelot, according to the way you want to put it -is spectacular, touching, and catchy. The love theme is bittersweet, yet very romantic. But what makes me give this album four stars is its length. At forty minutes, you get to hear Arthur's theme triumphantly, together with the love theme, in 'Camelot Lives' and 'Promise Me', and a piece of spectacular battle music for orchestra and chorus in 'Arthur's Farewell'. However, there is music missing in the album, you feel like kinda incomplete. This is a great Jerry Goldsmith composition that truly deserves an expanded edition.

Australian pop musician and producer turned film composer David Hirschfelder garnered an Academy Award nomination for the impressive pop and classical musical alchemy he conjured up for Shine. For Elizabeth (director Shekhar Kapur's nouveau-feminist take on the political and religious barrier-breaking rise of Queen Elizabeth I), Hirschfelder has again imbued familiar period-music clichés with just enough pop rhythmic and melodic flourishes to create a score that's fresh yet deceptively familiar. To his credit, Hirschfelder wears his influences proudly, interpolating Mozart, Elgar, Byrd, and Susato into his own, modern, sensibilities with seamless aplomb (only Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" seems trotted out just once too often). The composer (who also orchestrated) walks a fine musical line on Elizabeth, ultimately creating a musical fusion of the best kind.

Prepare yourself for a musical composition like none your auditory sense has ever experienced. Wojceich Kilar (who cares if you cannot pronounce his name!) has scored a... An... No singular adjective can possibly describe it. Let me put it this way - this score will sink its teeth into you (pun intended). And you will do the same in return. The entire score - not including the incongruous "Love Song For A Vampire" - is superb. Kilar completely eschews melodies, relying on a repetitive, minimalistic style. Even with its all too familiar "Mars the Bringer of War" style march, "Vampire Hunters" serves this symphony well. However, it is three particular pieces that tower over the rest.

"Dracula - The Beginning" is a perfect prologue, building from eerie, relentless, stringent notes, climaxing in a crescendo of blaring brass (in the film, this signified Dracula's rejection of God and his embracing of Satan). While this works well with the film, the entire score is better, more haunting, more nightmarish on its own. No greater example than in "The Storm". It begins with a soft - albeit quite mysterious - plucking of harp strings, tarrying until it has reached the faintest, gentlest note - piercing brass curtly disrupts this lull. After an unnerving passage of music, brass once again busts through the door, leading to repetitive, stentorian phrases accompanied by kettle drum and an otherworldly chorale arrangement. After electrifying blasts of brass, the chorus begins an ethereal chant of ascending and descending utterances - this particular section left me awe-struck. The piece appropriately ends with the gothic sounds of a cathedral organ. "Ring of Fire" (this MUST be listened to apart from the film), one of the shortest tracks on the CD, has the most impact. This is the absolute apex of experimental scoring. Not so much music, but a kaleidoscope of hellish, demonic voices and sounds superimposed by chorus. The sounds alone are mind-boggling and unlike anything you have ever heard before. How on Earth did Kilar achieve these preternatural sounds? The quality sounds too organic to have been generated by synthesizers. At one point the neighing of a horse can distinctly be heard. In another part, a mockingly puckish howl almost sounds as if it is saying "come on." By the end of this track, I was sitting with my eyes wider than a soup bowl, my jaw sitting in my lap. Wojceich Kilar has scored a masterpiece.

This is one of my all-time favorite soundtracks (as well as one of my "desert island pick" movies), for its music perfectly evokes the film's spirit and themes by combining historically pertinant pieces by Bach, Gluck, and Handel with original compositions by George Fenton. A despairing passion undercuts selections like "Beyond My Control" and "A Final Request", reminding the listener of the film's dark emotions and actions, whereas the lighter moments are brought to view in "Emilie" and "Ombra mai fu."
This is one that will grow on you. When first I purchased it, I only bought it for the Gluck aria "O Malhereuse Iphegenie," and disliked the majority of the other tracks, finding them sparse and odd, but once I started to listen to it, I found that Dangerous Liaisons worked its way into my CD player every day.

The French Academy of Film award winning score to the 1990 French film by Jean-Paul Rappeneau.

Good soundtrack gets you into the movie and makes you feel as if you are around as the story develops. A great soundtrack is the one that in addition to the above can be listened to in absence of the icon and still get you there. Jean-Claude Petit's Cyrano is one of these cases. Great music with many music themes, variations kept to a minimum and the film atmosphere all over the place. One of my favourite soundtracks, soon to become an all-time classic.

The main title of the score is one that will stay in your mind for a long time. Its repeated in most of the tracks on the album and it never gets tiring. It starts off with low brass before the strings swell the music into a loud fanfare. There are a few other themes in the album. Track 3: The Language of Romance introduces the beautiful love theme played by the flute. Another theme used three times in this album is a cue for a victorious moment. The militaristic cue is introduced at the end of track 6 and given steriods for the triumphant finale in track 18. The last track is basically a suite of the main themes of the album - as it should be. Overall, great soundtrack.

This is an incredible score and a must have for anyone that truly appreciates musical art.

The score in and of itself is very unique in that it blends the rythem of the time (1692 Salem, Mass.) and the feel of the culture into one pot. Its a very acceptional score and Fenton's work fits the film amazingly! If you like period scores this is a must buy as it will remind much of 17th century New England with a little bit of an erie side to it. I give it a thumbs up as it is a well composed score and AN EVEN MORE AWESOME PLAY/MOVIE! Check that out too.
